Project Overview

The Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau sought a complete redesign of their home page within the Commerce Learning Center to address several issues with the previous design. The original layout featured a one-dimensional aesthetic, limited use of colors, readability challenges, and content that caused unnecessary scrolling.

Stakeholders envisioned a dynamic and engaging new design, beginning with a custom-made video in the hero banner, layered with the page header and quick navigation buttons. Below the hero banner, the page was organized into structured content rows, including a learning search bar, custom inbox and assigned training widgets, a section for Census Universities, featured programs and featured training sections, and news & announcements at the bottom of the page.

To distinguish Census from other bureaus, the stakeholders requested a unique color palette, steering away from red, white, and blue. Instead, the design utilized dark grey as the primary color, complemented by medium blue and white, achieving a modern and professional aesthetic that aligns with the bureau’s identity.
